The Gingham Shirt

The gingham shirt. I’ll start by saying that in almost all cases I hate gingham. There is something so cheap and ordinary about this pattern but for some reason brands never stop producing it. It’s worn by everyone but very few people get it right. I don’t normally judge people by what they wear and I understand that everyone has a different idea of what looks good but the gingham shirt is something you should wear with caution. Most of the people wearing it wrong are younger. High school and early college students who have just started to interest themselves in the suiting game seem to think that gingham shirts pair perfectly with just about any tie. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Pattern mixing is an extremely difficult thing to get right. If you must wear a gingham shirt then wear it with a solid tie and solid blazer. I would even say to wear a solid pocket square and just keep things super simple up top. Pattern mixing can be fun and can look great but gingham is far to tricky. I will always suggest solid white and blue over any other shirts but if you need more pattern in your life then try thin stripes or maybe just a contrasting collar. I hope you don’t mind my little rant but I just don’t want you to go down that gingham road. Of course this is just my opinion. Let me know what you think. Thanks for reading!

Pitti Uomo 89 Trends: Layered Turtlenecks

[Turtleneck & Socks] Suitsupply [Blazer] Zara [Vest] H&M [Jeans] Maison Martin Margiela
[Scarf] Bottega Veneta [Shoes] Doucals [Watch] Daniel Wellington

For my final featured trend from Pitti Uomo 89 I’m talking about layered turtlenecks. I’m sure you’ve seen me wearing turtlenecks before and if you’re a follower then you know that my love for them is always growing stronger. At Pitti we saw men wearing them in all sorts of ways. My favorite had to be by layering them under a vest or waistcoat. The look created is super clean with straight lines and a slim silhouette. The great thing about this is that by wearing a light colored sweater you have pretty much a blank palette and can play around with patterns and colors as much as you want. If the turtleneck with vest look isn’t your thing then how about layering a turtleneck under an oxford shirt. Button up all the way to the top and allow only for the neck of the sweater to be showing. This is definitely a risky look but when paired with a statement blazer looks amazing. So for Pitti 89 trends we talked about capes, pocketed scarves , and now layered turtlenecks. Which one will you be trying out? Thanks for reading.

Pitti Uomo 89 Trends: Pocketed Scarf

[Blazer] Scotch & Soda [Coat & Trousers] Zara [Shirt] Dsquared2 [Scarf & Gloves] Calvin Klein
[Tie] Suitsupply [Shoes] Loake Shoemakers [Sunglasses] Trussardi

Earlier this week we tackled the cape trend seen being worn by many at Pitti Uomo 89, and now I’m here to talk about the scarf. I’m not telling you to simply wear a scarf or showing you the new coolest way to tie one. Instead I’m telling you to put it inside your coat pocket. Yep just stuff it in your pocket and let the ends hang out. This serves no practical purpose at all but it’s a nice detail and also is a great way to add another pattern or color to your outfit. I’m not entirely sure why people started doing this but I think it has to do with the fact that a scarf around your neck would cover your tie and collar. The last thing you want at Pitti is to hide all those beautiful details so people started removing their scarf and then just put it in their pocket so they wouldn’t have to hold it. It actually makes sense and is not a terrible idea. I like the way it looks and it’s a great alternative use of a scarf if the weather isn’t freezing cold. I might keep doing it and maybe try a silk scarf next time to keep down the bulk. Thanks for reading!

Pitti Uomo 89 Trends: The Cape

[Cape] Van Laack [Pants] Moschino [Shirt] Zara [Blazer] H.E By Mango
[Tie] Valentino [Shoes] Massimo Dutti

It’s that time of the year again. You know fashion season and with Pitti Uomo just ending it gives me the chance to show you some of my favorite trends spotted during the week long fashion event. Like last year, instead of only sharing street style images of others, I will try out the trends for myself and show you how I wear them. Today I’m talking all about the cape. Now there’s a couple of ways to go about wearing a cape. The most practical is by simply draping a coat over your shoulders. It’s not really a cape but the silhouette is still there and it utilizes pieces that you already have in your wardrobe. If you’re feeling a bit braver then go for a blanket style cape. It’s basically a blanket with the neck area cut out which allows for it to sit perfectly on your shoulders without slipping off. Capes like these can be found in most department stores but probably not in the mens section so don’t be afraid to peak around in the women's accessory area and do a little shopping for yourself. Go for something with a pattern such as black watch or larger tartan or a simple solid burgundy for a more elegant approach. What’s your thoughts on capes? Too feminine or just right?

We all know that a leather backpack looks great when worn with sneakers but my newest favorite

trend is pairing the same backpack with a formal suit. The look created is young and fresh. The

How To Wear Color Without Actually Wearing Color

Ahh the winter. In no other time of the year will you see more black coats and blue jeans. Seriously it’s almost all I see

and it can be a bit depressing. I wanted to wear color but realized I don’t have the most colorful winter wardrobe. Sure I

may wear bright red suits and baby blue pants but that’s all in the summer. Winter for me is all about embracing blue

and grey tailoring but sometimes I need a change. So I grabbed my trusty white denim and a camel turtleneck. Is it

color? No, but it's sure more colorful than back and grey.

Camel and white, one of the better winter color combinations if you ask me. There’s something so refreshing about the

crispness of these colors together. They are certainly not eye catching by description but for some reason when paired

together they make you pop. It’s the best way to add brightness to your outfit without going overboard with color.

There are several ways to pair them together but they all start with your best pair of white jeans. If you don’t already

have a pair then get them while the sales are still going on.

Once you’ve got your white jeans on then tuck in a camel turtle neck or crew neck sweater. The basic elements are

there so now all you need is a blazer. Stick to something a bit darker such as navy to really make the white and camel

pop. Another great option is to wear a camel overcoat with the same jeans. This may be a bit dressier but still perfect for

lunch dates and weekend shopping. The white and camel combination will make you the coolest man in town so just

embrace it, walk boss like and be confident. Thanks for reading.
